Those who grew up in 90s will have moist eyes while watching Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania. I didn’t feel it’s a remake, though it’s highly inspired by DDLJ, Humpty is more of a tribute towards the blockbuster. HSKD steals the heart of KJo fans. It takes you back to those mushy gushy romantic days of DDLJ.

Right at the beginning of the film, Humpty, played by Varun Dhawan, is seen watching DDLJ with his friends in teary eyes. His obsession for the endearing love story continues throughout the film.

Humpty is the story of how an overtly emotional Dilli boy meets a lively Ambala girl, Kavya, when she comes to Delhi to buy her wedding designer lehenga. Kavya is all set to marry an NRI doctor chosen by her father. The two inevitably falls in love and do their part of dance numbers.

While the first half of the film is about breezy romanticism and sardonic humour, the latter half embarks upon the usual clichés – a stubborn father who wants her daughter to marry his pick and must be won over, a whole lot of womenfolk who sympathize with the poor guy and the girl but unable to do much, and an impossibly perfect groom-to-be who must be proven otherwise.

The film is carried on mainly by the two leadings characters – Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt – supported by intermingling characters – Shonty and Poplu the two best friends of Humpty, a stubborn father of Kavya, and several household women. Siddharth Shukla needs a special mention. He fits perfectly in the role of an impeccable NRI doctor. The leap from Television to film was good and turned out to be successful for Siddharth.

As far as the music of HSKD goes, it was somewhat average. Club number Saturday Saturday was foot tapping. Samjhawan, the pathos number is brilliant in soulful voices of Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal. Akriti Kakkar, Benny Dayal and Anushka added to a few fresh numbers. But, whatever the songs are, Tujhe Dekha toh yeh jana sanam, still rings a bell in the heart as much the foot starts tapping with Le jayenge dilwale dulhaniya lejaenge.

Smart humour, intelligent dialogues – Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is overall a peppered entertainment. The signature style of Karan Johar’s wit and sarcasm is crackling.
